Features of a cocoon chair, making a cult model with your own hands
The middle of the twentieth century was marked by the birth of many interesting art objects, architectural and design innovations. One of the iconic inventions that have survived to an almost unchanged form today is the cocoon chair, coined by Danish designer Nanna Ditzel back in 1957. It looked like an egg in shape, attached to a tree or ceiling. For decades, the popularity of the model has steadily increased in Europe, and in recent years, furniture for relaxation has become a real cult in our country.
What is a
The main feature of this furniture is its shape. Despite the fact that it varies somewhat, all the chairs look like a cocoon: the same side height and backrest are connected above the head. The advantages of the model are:
- Decoration is the original eye-catching decoration of a room.
- Comfortability - you can curl up or work on a laptop, climbing inside with legs. If you fix the chair on the veranda, pleasant evenings are provided with a glass of wine or a cup of fragrant tea under a warm, cozy rug.
- Versatility - suitable for interiors in the Scandinavian, Mediterranean, Japanese, eco-style. Also used in modern areas - high-tech, modern, loft, pop art. It can be placed in the living room, nursery, bedroom, on the veranda of a country house.
- Exclusivity - a product made of metal elements, natural bamboo or vines, looks non-trivial, has relaxation and brings a special atmosphere to the room.
Choosing a model, take into account the possible load on the structure. Durable cocoon swings can withstand significant weight. The chair on a metal frame will hold up to 120 kg.
Varieties
Cocoon chairs are classified into groups according to the installation method, materials, shape, size, degree of closure of the structure. The variety of options allows you to choose a model in accordance with individual wishes, interior and complex owners. The following products are popular:
- With a soft frame - it's a kind of hammock, only compact. Such a chair is designed for a seated person, but if you wish, you can climb into it with your legs, the design will not suffer.
- Ball - a product in the form of a sphere with a rigid frame. It can be continuous, for example, from plexiglass or plastic, or rack - metal or rattan. Especially relevant are balls in interiors decorated in a modern style (modern, loft, pop art).
- Drop - is a cozy swing with a small inlet.Some models of teardrop-shaped children's cocoon chairs, designed for two people, have doors that make the piece of furniture even more functional, convenient and interesting for children.
Also, chairs are divided into types depending on the degree of openness of the structure. They can be maximally closed, deaf (an egg of colored plastic, a drop of dense fabric) or less “private” - with a lattice frame, transparent plastic or wicker. In order to choose the best model, you should take into account the preferences of all family members. Depending on the type of installation, there are:
- Hanging cocoon chairs. Mounted to the ceiling with carabiners and anchors. The space on the floor remains free, but it will not work to move the piece of furniture to a new place - you will have to dismantle it together with the fasteners and hang it again. In addition, the chair cannot be installed in a room with a suspended or suspended ceiling, unless a mortgage element is provided for it. After removing the fasteners, holes will remain on the surface.
- Stand models. They have a strong stable base in the form of a pillar, to the upper part of which a cocoon itself is attached to a chain or decorative cable.
- Floor armchair. It can be installed directly on the floor or attached to the rack using a rigid metal pipe. Such structures do not swing, but are able to rotate around its axis.
Due to the design features, the size of the furniture is of fundamental importance. The comfort of the chair largely depends on this indicator. By the size of the product are compact single and spacious double. The latter in appearance resemble a small sofa.
Materials
The material of manufacture determines the cost and service life of the structure. Models with a rigid frame, especially made of metal, last much longer. The advantages of frameless products are low weight and low price. Most often, the following types of raw materials are used for manufacturing:
- Metal. Armchairs are made of steel or aluminum wire of different thickness and width, coated with powder paint, resistant to external influences.
- Rattan. It is a variety of tropical creeper with a smooth and even vine. It is resistant to changes in temperature and humidity. From natural material, hanging cocoon chairs are often made to order, and in mass production they use a synthetic analogue.
- Vine and willow twigs. Materials are a budget alternative to rattan. They are also well ventilated, characterized by high strength, but less smoothness, so they are complemented by large soft pillows over the entire area.
- Acrylic, plastic, plexiglass. Products look ultramodern. For example, the popular model from "Ikea" resembles an egg in shape, and the outer surface is made of glossy plastic. Such chairs have blank walls, which in people with fear of confined space can cause psychological discomfort.
- Wooden slats. The material undergoes special processing, which allows to give the details a rounded shape.
- Nylon or cotton cord. Its advantage is that weaving easily adapts to the shape of the body of a person sitting in it. Disadvantages: less strength compared to other materials, difficulty in maintenance. It is enough to wipe the chairs made of plastic or rattan with a rag, and the cord requires washing, as it absorbs dirt.
Inside the chair, soft pillows are placed. As a filler for them, a synthetic hypoallergenic material is used - holofiber. Size, softness, configuration can vary. A popular solution for cocoons is the tandem pillow mattress with small extra cushions.
If the cocoon chair will be installed on the street, it is worth choosing a waterproof upholstery with special impregnations.If in the house - any cotton or synthetic furniture fabric that is tactile and has good wear resistance is suitable.
How to do it yourself
A simple design can be created without a drawing, focusing on the dimensions of the hoop available at hand. Before making a cocoon chair on a frame of a more complex configuration, you will need to select a drawing or execute it yourself. It is necessary to determine the exact dimensions of parts, design features and its presentation in finished form.
Of the tools required:
- tailoring tape or tape measure;
- scissors;
- threads with needles;
- sewing machine.
For the manufacture of chairs in the shape of a cocoon, it is also necessary to prepare the following materials:
- hoop - ø 0.7-1 m;
- fabric - two pieces, at least 50 cm larger than the diameter of the hoop;
- synthetic winterizer;
- lightning;
- carbines - 2 pieces;
- rings - to hang a chair;
- ropes - 2 × 2.2 m and 2 × 2.8 m.
The algorithm for manufacturing a hanging cocoon chair:
- On a flat surface, cut the fabric sections with each other with their front sides, place a hoop in the center.
- Focusing on his position, draw a circle larger than the diameter of the hula hoop by 30 cm, cut it out.
- Fold and cut one of the fabric circles in half - sew in a zipper to connect the parts again.
- Fold both circles with each other, with the front sides inward, stitch on the seamy side on a typewriter.
- Wrap the hoop with a padding polyester and fix the material with threads, so the chair frame will be softer and more convenient to use.
- Insert the hoop into the cover turned on the front side.
- Mark the lines for attaching the ropes. Make holes.
- To ensure that the edges do not crumble, braid them.
- Pass the ropes through the holes. Bring all the ends together so that the ropes are folded in half, tie them.
- Use the fasteners to install the product.
To sit in a chair was more convenient, it is additionally worth sewing voluminous pillows.
Suspended or stand-up cocoon chairs are a functional decoration of the interior. They serve as a convenient place for relaxation, reading books, leisurely work, and needlework. Thanks to a wide range of products, as well as the possibility of independent production of such furniture, you can get a cozy and original design that best meets individual requirements.
